| Bio: | I'm 24 years old, raised in Maine and now living in Vermont. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Religion, which I've put to good use in various minimum-wage cashiering jobs over the year and a half since graduation. I read a lot, I'm a book snob ("can't see that movie, I haven't read the book yet) and a literary elitist hypocrite (I'll read trashy thrillers, I just do it where no one can see). I like the idea of fandom, but damn it, fans are insane and fandom is fucking funny. I'm a Hellenic Polytheist Pagan, a bisexual, an alcoholic in recovery, and a half-dozen other things that no one cares about (if you do care, in the bad way, plz to be leaving my journal nao, kthxbye). Dramatis Personae: Daniel: a student (Emily's lover) Mike: a student (Daniel's roommate) Sam: a student (Emily's brother) Dad: a writer Mom: someone with a lot of pets Mack: a cat Molly: a baker (Emily's friend) Vincent: a security guard (Emily's roommate) Glossary UVM: Universitas Viridimontanis (Lat: University of the Green Mountains), or, in English, the University of Vermont. It's where I went to college, and where most of my friends still go. Burlington: the small Vermont city in which I currently live. UVM is located here. Orono: the town in Maine where I grew up. Mom still lives there. Bangor: the nearest city to Orono. Dad currently lives there, as did I, for a while. Portland: largest city in Maine (or the only city, if you're from there). I lived there for a year or so before moving back to Burlington. Sam goes to University there, and Molly is from that area. Blurbs about me, from a meme: "Emily's like a lighthouse glowing brightly in the midst of the cliffs of idiocy and mediocrity and, when necessary, sounding the foghorn of common sense, so that those of us who consider her a friend can find our way. If it were possible to trick her into turning into a fly so I could swallow her, have her take up room in my brain, and impart her wisdom on a constant basis you best believe I would. (Un?)Fortunately, she's not as dumb as Metis." ~ "emily_goddess is one of those rare people who aren't afraid to express their opinion honestly...even if it differs from yours. She isn't afraid to let you know, but it's never in a way that is upsetting. She doesn't make you feel that you are wrong, but just shows that she likes to discuss things. She's smart and funny and her journal reflects this, containing a mix of interesting tidbits and glimpses into her life." ~ "you're my shining light of sinspiration" ~Liz My favorite sites: Beliefnet - religion-related news and articles, plus communities for any and all religions (including thriving boards for Atheism, Science vs. Religion, and political/cultural topics). Something Positive - smart, darkly hilarious webcomic by Randy Milholland. If there's any subject that you think is "never funny, no matter what," chances are Randy's already made a joke about it - definitely not for the easily offended, and all the funnier for it. Seriously, why aren't you reading it yet? Questionable Content - a webcomic with beautiful art, obscure music references, "smartassery," and a tiny robot. What's not to love? Fandom Wank - some people take their fandoms way too seriously; Fandom_Wank records all the best fights, flounces and pseuicides for posterity. Good, judgmental fun! Savage Love - weekly advice on love and sex, but this isn't your parents' advice column. If you're wondering whether your wife's estrogen meds will affect you when you drink her urine, or unsure how to hog-tie your lover without cutting off his circulation, Dan Savage is the man to ask. And he's got a podcast now! The Kingdom of Loathing: It's a low-graphics, click-based RPG. It's a satire of RPG's. It's the largest collection of allusions, references and inside jokes on the Internet. Oh, and it's addictive as Hell. (Wondering how to cook food, what combines with what, or what you need to finish a quest? There's a wiki for that). And, finally, Neil Gaiman's Blog. He's a fun, eloquent blogger, and he's so damn normal (except for the worldwide book tours and the legions of screaming fans). You'll get insight into the "backstage" aspects of writing, publishing, and being involved with movies. Always a good read. ![]() ![]() Buffy Summers mood theme made by | |
